Sometimes kids say the craziest things!

My daughter frequently makes me laugh out loud at the things she comes up with. Sometimes its a funny phrase. Sometimes she gets a word stuck in her head and repeats it giggling (PEPPERONI.... hahahahaha) and of course they repeat EVERYTHING. Im sure every parent at some time has experienced the horror of something completely inappropriate coming out of a little ones mouth.

This challenge is all about the WORDS.

Origami Gift Box

Hi everyone! Jess here, with a little origami box that is just perfect for holding gift cards, a folded onesie, baby socks, hair bows, or any other small gift. It is so simple to make that you may never buy another small box again!

Begin by selecting two pieces of coordinating 12" x 12" paper. They can be double sided but don't have to be. You will primarily see the top cover of the box so choose whichever paper you want most visible for that and leave it 12" x 12". Set this paper aside.

Cut the bottom paper down to 11.5" x 11.5"... we will start with this one.

Take your bottom box paper and fold it in half both ways. Use a bone folder or other flat, smooth tool to make neat and crisp folds. Open it again.

Fold each corner up to the center so that the side of the paper you want showing is on the outside.

Fold the top and bottom up to meet in the middle.

Open those folds and crease the opposite sides in the exact same way, meeting them in the center. Open up these last four folds like so:

Pull the top and bottom triangles out. Use the creases on the sides that we made in the last step to fold the edges upright like so:

The paper will naturally "help" you with this next fold. Holding the sides in place, pull the top triangle up like so:

Fold the remaining part of the triangle down and tuck it back so it "locks" the side in place. You may want to put a small amount of adhesive on the bottom flap to keep it there.

Repeat the last few steps with the other side to complete the bottom of the box.

To create your box cover grab that 12" x 12" cover paper and repeat all the above steps. There is absolutely NO difference in the way the top and bottom are folded!

You'll see that the paper size difference is just enough to let the box bottom slip perfectly into the box top.

Now all you have to do is finish decorating your box! I added a border cut band, ribbon, some small flowers, and a tag and this is ready to go for a sweet gift for a little one!

Heather's Fabric rolled flowers Tutorial.

Fabric rolled flowers.

Hi there! I was at Target recently and was admiring their beautiful flower headbands. They really are pretty, but kind of expensive if you know how to just put them together yourself. Today I will show you how to make a fabric rolled flower and how to turn it into a pretty headband for yourself or for your little girl.

1. Cut a strip of fabric about 1 1/2" wide and about 2 ft long. You can make it longer or shorter depending on the size of flower you want to create. Fold fabric lengthwise up to the middle of the strip and glue it down with fabric glue. I used Beacons 3 in 1 glue; its a bit messy but gets the job done.

2. Do the same with the other side.

3. Now roll up the strip tightly about 5 or six times.

4. After you have made your roll (this is the center of the flower) then you can start twisting the fabric. Alternate between twisting and just laying flat. Be sure to use a bit of glue every so often.

5. Keep twisting and laying until you have about an inch left of fabric.

6. Tuck this piece under and glue onto the back.

7. Now you can either stop here, or you can make it a little extra special...

8. Cut out 2 small circles from some felt. These need to be slightly smaller than the circumference of your flower.

9. Cut out ten 4" circles from some tulle. Using 2 pieces of tulle, fold them in half.

10. Now you are going to fold it accordian style so it looks like there are 3 ripples. Take a little bit of thread and just make a couple quick stitches in the bottom to keep them in place. Do this with the remaining tulle so you will have 5 total.

11. Glue the tulle in a circular pattern onto one of the felt circles.

12. Glue the flower onto the tulle.

13. Fluff out the tulle to make it pretty.

14. Glue your flower onto your headband. Use the remaining felt circle and glue it on the bottom to reinforce the flower.

15. Glue a brad into the center of the flower.

16. And you are done!!

Now you can make flowers for just about anything! Try them on some slippers, a handbag or even try a necklace. I hope you enjoyed this little tutorial, thanks for stopping by!!

4/23 Jenny's altered notebook tutorial

Hi Everybody. Jenny checking in with this week’s tip. The next time you’re in the dollar store or the $1. spot at your local Target or Michaels, pick up a handful of plain (ish) notebooks. Or, when you’re in the stationary section at one of those closeout stores like Big Lots, look around for some fun little books there too.. Altered notebooks are inexpensive and quick gifts for teachers or family or neighbors. Or, if you’re a list maker like myself, you’ll put them to good use yourself! I found these black notebooks at Walmart for $3 a piece. The tall one has perforated pages with both “To Do” and “To Buy” sections. How cool is that?!?

I added some fun new and old Sassafras goodies and voila…

This second notebook has color coded index cards within. I thought this one would be perfect for writing random notes about each of my brood (one section for each of the Bigs, and one section for the twins to share).

Using some Mod Podge to adhere the base paper and The Ultimate to adhere all the rest, I came up with this…

You can also make notebooks for your kids… This one I used a Quikutz composition notebook die.

Here’s an example of a notebook to make during Teacher Appreciation Week. You know that’s just around the corner.

Prompt 27: Ultrasounds

For most women its the very first picture of your baby you will ever receive. Its the ultrasound or sonogram photo. Some people are lucky to get 1, some get many many peeks at that bundle of joy coming their way.

Your challenge is to scrap that ultrasound picture!! I do suggest that you scan and reprint your US before you scrap it. Most are made on thermal paper and overtime they will darken overtime.

04/08 Melanie's Paper Tearing Tutorial

Today I am going to share with you a simple yet effective paper tearing technique that will create dimension on your page. You will need 2 sheets of patterned paper, a pencil and a paper trimmer.

Step 1. With your two co-ordinating patterned papers, choose which paper will be the top design (known as paper 1.) I have found if you use a bold design, complimenting it with a solid design is a wonderful look. Trim paper 1 down to your preferred size, height wise. Do not trim the paper length-wise yet. I have measured paper 1 using my photos so it will frame the photos.

Step 2. After you have paper 1 trimmed to your preferred size, trim paper 2 to frame it height-wise, allow about 1 to 1.5cm on top and bottom. Place paper 1 on top of paper 2 with the edges (short side) touching.

Step 3. Hold the two sheets of paper in your hand and slowly rip the edge towards yourself. Make it as grayed and jagged as you wish.

When you have finished ripping and you move paper 1 slightly, you will see that the ripped edges match up perfectly within the "frame."

Step 4. Decide how long you want the papers to be and measure paper 1 to your preferred length. I have added the two photos to the paper to assess how long I need paper 1. Make a small pencil mark where you want the paper to be ripped (allowing about an inch from the photos.)

Step 5. Using your paper trimmer, remove the excess paper.

Step 6. Place paper 1 on paper 2 with the torn edges about 1cm apart then measure paper 1 and add 4.5 to 2cm on the straight edges (length.)

Step 7. Line up the straight edges of papers 1 and 2 (remember to leave 1 to 2cm on the top and bottom) and repeat step 3, slowly ripping towards yourself. You will now have a perfect torn edge that frames paper 1. Ink the edges or distress them for added dimension then use these elements to assemble your page.

I have used this technique on my recent Messy, Messy, Messy page to create dimension and add layers.

2. Where are you from: from Iowa (go Hawkeyes!), but currently live in northern Missouri. definately not my first choice. or second. or third.

3. Tell us about you: I am 31 (gasp-seems like yesterday i was 22 living with my bestie *insert amy farafowler voice*), wife to David and mama to two little guys I call M and Q. Currently on maternity leave from my full time job...thinking I will go back as part time and maybe try to get some classes. I will graduate college one day even if I am 67 and gray. I don't always scrap "pretty." Journaling is a must. My pages to reflect what my heart feels at that moment...sometimes nice and sweet and other times not so much. You may see bright and bold on one page and plain and simple on another. I like to mix it up.

4. Tell us about your babies: Maxx just turned 3 on Feb. 29th and is obsessed with Mario. He refers to himself as Mario ("I'm not Maxx! I'm Mario!) and he has names for everyone in the fam. (i'm princess peach...ahhhh) I'm sure you will see a layout about that sometime. Quinn is our newest addition as of January 28th of this year. What a sweet little guy he is and his big brother adores him. He has spent 1/3 of his life in the hospital due to him recently having rsv and pneumonia. We are currently catching up on all that lost cuddle time.

2. Where are you from: I'm a Wisconsin girl at heart, but I'm currently living in the Chicago 'burbs.

3. Tell us about you.....I am 31 years old (is it bad that I had to think about that?!),an elementary music teacher, mother to Mirielle and Sprout (due very soon) and wife to Justin. We also have a very loveable and energetic boxer named Maddie. :) I have been scrapping since middle school, but more seriously in the last probably 5-6 years. I also love reading, writing, and photography.

Tell us about your babies.....Mirielle (pronounced like Muriel, but with an "i"...why did I give my kid a confusing name, I'll never know!) will be two at the end of March and baby Sprout is due to arrive at the beginning of April. Mirielle is the most amazing little girl...I look at her every day and wonder how I managed to get such a fun, cool little daughter! 3. Tell us about you..... Hi, I'm Kelly C (or kelzpop for most people in the scrapping world). I am lucky enough to be a SAHM to my two kiddos and two dogs, and some days the dogs require more work. I have been scrapping forever, or at least it seems like it. I love paper crafting, including cards and home decor. I also have a love of photography, which has definitely helped enhance my desire to scrap. Some other things I love to do aside from scrapping (like there should be anything) are geocaching, cooking and spending time with my family! I love being a mom and almost all aspects of it, but some days I could pass on the dirty diapers.

4. Tell us about your babies.....I have two kids - Grayson who will soon be turning 3 and Braelyn who is just a few months old. Grayson is 100% boy through and through, which can be tiring some days. If he can hit it with a hammer or crash a car into it, then he is happy. He loves trains, power wheels and riding in daddy's truck. Braelyn is still so small, but loves to smile and coo at everybody. I love their age split and love seeing them interact together. Grayson totally adores his sister at this point, and I hope it stays that way for awhile!

5. your favorite scrappy supply Whether I've made them to match or I'm pulling some from my stash - I love all kinds of flowers.

6. your favorite must have baby item Definitely my stash of cloth diapers. Some of my favorites are the ones I've sewn myself. I love that I don't have to run to the store b/c I am almost out of sposies!

She has such a gentle little sole. She can be quite shy outside of our home but when she warms up she is such a daggy little monkey! She has just started Ballet (I can't wait to start scrapping some ballet photos!!). Evie is 4 months old. Her personality is just starting to shine. She is extremely vocal! Whether she screams with excitement or screams because she is grumpy one thing for sure is that she is one loud little bambino!

3. Tell us about you..... I am a mom to an almost 2 year-old (gasp!) and a part-time worker at an after school program for grades K to 6th. I just celebrated 3 years of marriage with my hubby and we are soon to celebrate 7 years together in April. I started scrapbooking about 7 years ago and I haven't stopped. I have struggled for a long time finding my style and being comfortable with it. I finally just let go and accepted my style and didn't try to be 'somebody' else. I almost all ink my layout in many places, use buttons, use die cuts and keep it clean and simple. And every since I just let go I average about 20 to 30 layouts per month!

Tell us about your babies..... my kiddies xoxo alexa is now 8 she was born at 27 weeks, was 2 pounds 9.6oz and we will always call her peanut!! wil is 6 he is my love bug! he was born at 33 weeks and was born flatlined. he was brought back to life right in front of my eyes! he has nf1 (the boy from the movie mask *with cher* had nf2). then gavin, my baby! he is 2 was also born at 33 weeks. he was born with a congenital defect (esophageal atresia) he esophagus and trachea were attached. he has some issues from it and the surgery, but if you saw my little monster you would never know!!!!!

Oh em gee it was SOOOOO hard this time around. We got such an amazing response to our design team call I almost didnt want to choose. My inbox if full of fantastic layouts and adorable babies. There is so much talent out there it's unreal! Im sad I couldnt take everyone.

2/23 Maya's cute lil mini tutorial

Our grandparents and all our extended family lives thousands of miles away. We see them every year or two - definitely not enough. To help my 2 years old to learn the faces of his grandparents, uncles and aunts I made a small mini album for him. I started with a package of small clear pockets. Mine were from a scrapbook store but clear badge holders from an office supply store will work great. I found the pictures I want to include and printed them.

I cut several pieces of cardstock to fit into the pockets and cropped the pictures to be 0.25" smaller than the cardstock. I adhered the pictures from both sides of the cardstock and added the names using small letter stickers. I decided to use minimal embellishments to keep the focus on the faces and names.

I slipped the cards into the pockets and tied them with a piece of ribbon.

Eli loved looking through the album and pointing at the faces. I hope that he will be ready to meet his grandparents in few months when they will come to visit us.

I cant believe its almost been a YEAR of fun and babies!! We are losing a few of our fabulous designers so Scrap that Baby! is looking to add at least 4 more enthusiastic scrappers to our fabulous design team! If you love to scrap kids 4 and under we are looking for you!

To apply email scrapthatbaby@hotmail.com the answers to the following questions and attach 3 of your favorite baby layouts (that best showcase your current style)

1. Tell us about the babies you scrap. (ages newborn thru 4) How old are they? Are you Mommy? Grandma? Nana? Auntie Sarah? Babysitter? Are you scrapping pictures of your grown(or semi-grown) children from way back when?

2. Are you (or have you been) on any other design teams? (no experience necessary... just nosy)

12/23 Kelly's custom bouquet tutorial

For my daughter’s 1^st birthday, I wanted to go with the theme “Cupcakes & Strawberries”. Since she has a June birthday I thought this would be a perfect theme. I had a very difficult time finding decorations to go with this theme so I decided to make my own. I came up with personalized bouquet for the table.

I started with cardstock, patterned paper, adhesive, stickles, wooden dowels, my cricut, a vase (that I had just sitting around), packing tape, green floral filler & shredded decorative paper or raffia.

I cut out the designs and figures I wanted to use. In this case it included cupcakes, strawberries and birthday themed items along with one “Angry Gopher” for the face my daughter would make for absolutely any reason she could findJ I knew I would have this arrangement against a wall so I didn’t care what the back looked like. If I was going to use this vase in the open then I would duplicate the base cut and seal the dowel in between the front base and the back cover base so you and your guests wouldn’t be able to see the packing tape holding the design to the dowel.

After I’ve assembled my figures/designs, I add accents with stickles, white pen and black marker. The stickles needs to dry before moving on or it will smudge.

Once everything is dry, I use packing tape to adhere the wooden dowels to the designs/cut-outs. Then place the green filler foam in the bottom of your vase and insert/arrange the dowels in the fashion you want them to be displayed. Take the shredded paper and cover the green filler so it can’t be seen. Pack it around and inside the vase so it will stay put.

Ta Da! A custom made bouquet for your little prince or princess’s birthday (or whatever occasion! I’ve made these for 40^th and 50^thbirthdays too.)

Nothing can be more calming than watching a baby sleep. Something about watching her little eyes close and flutter into dreamland just makes my heart melt.

12/08 Jess's rolled flower tutorial

Today I'm going to show you how to create rolled flower embellishments two different ways. I love these flowers because they're super easy, you can make them to match your project, and they are about as inexpensive as it gets!

You'll need a length of crepe paper, scraps of cardstock, brads, and adhesive for the first flower. I often use white crepe paper because it matches everything and is ink-able and mist-able if you want to color it. And it's less than $1 a roll!

- Fold the crepe paper in half width-wise. Don't worry too much about the length, as it will vary depending on the size flower you want. Err on the side of too long, rather than too short.

- Tie a loose knot in one end.

- We're going to create the petals by folding the paper over at a 90 degree angle. Continue folding the paper this way, always in the same direction, as show in the photo... but fold it starting close up to the knot. I just wanted you to see how the folds look.

- Continue to fold and wrap in a circular pattern around the knot, loosely holding it with your fingers. Take care to not smash the petals as you go!

- Here is what the underside looks like:

- When you've folded enough to get the size you want trim the paper and tuck the end under. It should look like this:

- Punch a hole in the center of a scrap piece of cardstock. Use a paper piercer or other sharp tool to poke a hole through the center of the flower. Push a brad through the flower and backing and set the ends.

- For this flower I first sprayed the crepe paper with pink mist and let it dry. Pretty!

- The next flower requires the same items as the first, but without a hole in the center of the circle backing. Instead, cover the entire circle (the size you want your finished flower) with adhesive.
- Tie one end of the crepe paper in a knot and twist the rest of the paper into a thin rope.

- Stick the knot on the center of your adhesive covered circle and begin to wrap the rope of paper around the knot.

- Continue until you reach the end of the circle backing, trim and tuck the end to the back.

- Add a brad if you want one.

These flowers also look amazing when they're made from strips of fabric or ribbons! When I use fabric scraps, like I did for this last flower, I love to use a selvedge edge or tear the strip so there are loose threads showing, giving it a distressed feel.

Now you have a little garden of homemade blooms to add to your scrapbook pages, gifts, cards, or other crafty projects!

Prompt 18: OUCH!

Bumps and bruises happen... especially if you have a toddler.

This prompt is all about the OUCH! Scrap something that hurt. A gigantic bruise from that first big wipeout, the time you were up all night with a sick baby, those teeth cutting or a broken bone . I know these dont seem like the most pleasant memories but they are things you will want to remember.

11/23 Heather's rockin spiral flower technique

I'm obsessed with spiral roses. Seriously. I love how easy they are to make and how you can make them small or big, with glitter or without. The possibilities are endless!

So today, I will show you how to make them!

1. First, you will need to trace and cut a circle from your paper. I just used a tin to draw my circle. Double sided paper works best for these, but one sided paper (like I used) works okay, too.

2. Now you need to cut a spiral into the circle. It doesn't have to be perfect. Make sure when you get to the center of the circle that you leave a big enough piece left. That piece will be the base that you glue your flower to.

3. Cut off the funky piece to make your spiral look more uniformed.

4. Starting from the outside, roll the paper as tight as you can. Continue to roll until you come to the base. Once again, the roll doesn't have to be perfect either.

5. Before you glue your flower to the base, carefully let go of the spiral so that it kind of fans out. You can adjust your flower to be as tight or as open as you want it to be.

6. Glue the spiral to the base. Make sure you use a heavy duty glue. (I like Beacons.) After you glue it together, hold it together for a few seconds to help it adhere. Set it aside for a couple minutes to dry.

7. Now is the fun part! You can paint, glitter, ink or distress the flower. Or just leave plain!!

On this flower, I used a glue pen to disperse glue on random parts of the flower. Then I poured glitter over it.

I hope you enjoyed learning how to make your own spiral roses! They are very addicting to make!

Some babies HATE the bath and cry the minute they hit the water. Some babies just LOVE bath time and cry when its time it get out. Either way there is almost nothing cuter than watching a little one splash around in the water.

11/08 Melanie's dimension trtechnique

Today I will be doing a tutorial on adding dimension to hand-cut paper flowers.

This can also be used for store bought paper flowers and light chipboard flowers.

Step 1.

Firstly hand cut the flower from your patterned paper.

Using a sharp craft knife and sheet of glass for best results.

If you desire, you can ink the flower before curling to achieve the all over inked edges.

Step 2.

You will be using a kebab skewer, awl or other sharp pointed tool to curl the edges.

Place the sharp end of the tool on the tip of the flower petal

Step 3.

With your finger on the flower tip, lightly turn the skewer and push with your finger to assist the paper to roll up. Move on to all petals until they are curled in.

Step 4.

All petals will be curled in now, you can lightly pull out the curls until you are happy with how they look and depending on how tight you want the flower to be.

Step 5.

Your flower will now be raised and have dimension yet not be overly bulky for your albums.

The flower is best stacked using different sized paper flowers. Embellish with brads, pearls or any other embellishment you have on hand.

This is a card I created using this technique. I left the bottom flower flat so the top layer looked more 3-dimensional.

10/23 Michelle's fabric roses tutorial

Here's a simple little tutorial on how to make fabric roses.

Cut a variety of different sized circles from a nylon based fabric

Chiffon, satin, tulle and organza work best.

You need to make sure that your fabric does not contain any cotton or it will burn and catch on fire. This is very important as it can be dangerous.

Use a small lit tea light candle and hold the edge of your fabric circle just above the flame until it starts to melt and continue to melt all the way around your petal.

Stack your finished petals from largest to smallest .

Stitch a button or bead in the middle and there you have it, a fabric rose all ready to stick on your layout or card.

Prompt 15: Making Mischief

Aubrey likes to empty things. She pulls all the clothes out of a newly folded basket of laundry. She takes every DVD out of the entertainment center. She dumps her toys out of her toybox and sits in it and squeals.

9/23 Gracie Ann's mini embellishment storage

I thought of sharing this simple tutorial on how to make a mini embellishment organizer made of cardstock. It's a creative and resourceful way of using scrapbook materials to create an organizer for our small embellishments such as brads, eyelets, buttons, pins, etc.

Mini embellishment organizer

Materials needed:
1 pc.- 8 3/16 x 5 1/2 cardstock
2 pcs- 5x5 cardstock
Glue or double-sided tape
Patterned papers to decorate boxes
2- Buttons
2- Brads
Score tool
Scissors

To create the shelf :

1. Using the 8 3/16th by 5 1/2 inches cardstock, scored each side 2 inches from the edges.

2. Cut vertically up the folds towards the middle (2 cuts going up on the bottom and 2 cuts coming down from the top)

3. Fold and adhere edges to form a rectangular shaped box. See photo for cutting and folding reference.
4. Decorate the shelf with patterned paper

To create the drawers: (Do this for the 2 pieces of 5x5 cardstock)
1. Score 1.5 inches from the edges of all sides of the 5x5 cardstock
2. Cut the paper along the vertical fold only until the middle3. Fold and adhere edges together to form a square box
4. Decorate the drawers with patterned paper.
4. Insert the brad inside the button's hole and then insert the two in the middle part of the drawers. These will serve as their handles.

Fill your mini drawers with small embellishments. You can also create more shelves with boxes and stack them on top of each other. There you have it. Your very own embellishment organizer. :)

9/08 Jenny's "Patterned paper is your friend" techniques

I like patterned paper. There. I said it. Sure cardstock is pretty, but come on, now isn’t this fun?!?…

Yikes. I have a lot of friends who look at my piles of scrappy paper and utter aloud, “ Now what in the world would I do with that?” I think the problem some people have when looking at busy pp is that they just don’t look close enough. When I look at a sheet of pp I see what my pink Cutterbee scissors can do with it. The very first thing I do when I get home from the scrappy store with a bunch of new supplies is to start cutting up my paper. See that first Sassafras paper above? I just started cutting into it. I looked for sections of designs I could cut out while still maintain some orderly shape. I cut out 2 corners of flowers and mounted them on my base paper. See here. Take note of the upper and lower left corners.

Next I found some more single flowers and cut them out and mounted them on popdots. Besides my trusty Cutterbees I also NEED a plethora of popdots to add to my patterned paper creations. Like so…

I also cut out one of those cute frames from the second Sass paper. I cut out the owl that was framed and backed it with a scrap of another Sass paper. I used that for some of my journaling. To finish it off I used yet another busy Sass scrap and punched the butterflies.

For this next page from my archives, I used the 3rd Sassafras paper. Isn’t she lovely?

Now, that’s what I call a sheet of paper with endless possibilities. There are so many cool elements to fussy cut. The first thing I did was cut out the top set of rainbow rings. But to clean up the edge I simply took a piece of pp and and pleated it and followed the curve of the edge of the Sass paper. Once I had it just the way I wanted it, I stitched it down. I added a couple more pieces of paper handcut once again and popped up one of them (the frame) with another popdot. Like so..

For yet a final design element I used another paper and hand cut the branch. It was facing the wrong direction for my page, so I simply rotated it before I adhered it. Rather than gluing down each single leaf and branch I only tacked down the main branch leaving the rest to kinda flutter in the breeze. Like so…

I hope you’ve enjoyed your peek into my mind when I’m playing with my paper and glue. Now go out and get cutting!

I am so excited to be guest designing for Scrap That Baby.

I have 3 amazing not-so baby boys of my own. 14,8,6.

I have been scrapping for just over 2 years now, I love scrapbooking and all crafting.
